America’s social services net is a mess.  Though agency budgets and staffing continue to grow, performance and positive impact is shrinking.  There’s a reason for this poor performance –programs developed out of government are doomed to fail.  That’s a bold statement, but it’s readily validated.  Meaningful change in human beings always comes from relationships.  No matter the activity or opportunity, if it doesn’t prioritize relationships, it won’t work.  That’s why low-budget programs like Girl Scouts, Big Brother, and A.A. work better than expensive big government efforts high on expectations – low on performance and outcome.  Government takes the relationship factor out of everything and replaces it with the cold, hard, and indifferent hand of bureaucracy.  Without a human-to-human relationship with those we wish to help or change, nothing good will happen.  The hollow promises of big government will always be just that.
