Drugs, both legal and illegal, continue to be America’s scourge. Taking a pill or other substance for time out from reality is neither innocent nor natural.  Reality never takes a time out on us.  Those who rely on drugs to get through life work less, abuse their loved ones more, get sick more often, contribute less to society, and use up more resources than folks who stand on their own two feet.  As time passes and the reality of how broke America is really sinks in, our social service net is going to fall apart in a major way.  The sooner we start attaching responsibility to help the better.  A good start is making drug testing a condition of services.  Two things will happen.  Some will change their behaviors.  Others will walk away and free up resources for those seeking a hand-up instead of a hand-out.  That’s a win-win for everyone but those who make the choice to misuse drugs – and the rest of us.
